8th September, 2011

Around 11 am in the morning a congregation of 11 monks and around 100 Tibetan college students in Chennai gathered at Binny link road opposite to Spencer plaza to show their solidarity for the death of monks and self-immolation by one of the monks in Tibet.

Tsewang Norbu, the young monk who had self-immolated himself had demanded freedom for Tibet and to allow the return of His Holiness The Dalai lama to Tibet. The eleven monks are on their way to South India for a nation wide hunger fast around the major cities in India.
.
Lobsang Jampa, a young monk present in the hunger fast said
"People in Tibet are suffering under cruel Chinese rule with no freedom of any kind. Therefore they risked their lives hoping that Tibetan in exile will be able to internationalise the issue of Tibet. Since we are in a free country we should not remain silent spectator."

Rinchen Namgyal, President of Tibetan student association of Madras said "It is inspiring that the Tibetan monks are taking such initiation around India and we are happy to join them in Chennai in the hunger fast to express our solidarity with those who are suffering in tibet".

The eleven  monks contingents will be travelling to Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi with support of local Tibetan college students. They have already covered Pune and Baroda.
