53rd National Uprising Day in Chennai By TSAM and RTWA

Regional Tibetan Women’s Association of Hunsur (RTWA) and Tibetan Students’ Association of Madras (TSAM) jointly organised protest movement in Chennai in commemoration of 53rd Tibetan National Uprising Day.
TSAM and Regional Tibetan Women’s Association, (RTWA) Hunsur, jointly organised a protest on March 10, 2012 to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the Tibetan Uprising Day against the illegal Chinese occupation. Both the Tibetan Students’ Association of Madras and Regional Tibetan Women’s Association based in Hunsur jointly started the day with a Press Conference at the Press Club of Chennai spelling out the reasons for the commemoration of the anniversary. The speakers include two spokes persons from RTWA, its president and the president of Tibetan Students’ Association of Madras (TSAM) around 12:00 noon lasting nearly one and half an hour following question and answer session. They briefed the media on the significance of March 10 and the dire situation prevailing in Tibet with spades of self-immolations. The media personnel present were The Hindu, UTI, Indian Express and number of Tamil channels and papers.



In the evening, the two associations started demonstration and protest at Memorial Hall, Chennai around 3:00 pm. The programme began with presidential speech from TSAM president, followed by speech from spokes person of RTWA. Several Indian student supporters from different colleges and Dr. Mani, head of department of politics and Public Administration, Madras University and Friends of Tibet Tamil Nadu chapter in charge Mr. Hubert also spoke in support of the Tibetan people and movement against Chinese rule. More than 150 Tibetan students and 50 members from RTWA, Hunsur have partaken in the protest movement. The programme included singing of National Uprising Song known as “Memory of 10th March” and Tibet Freedom Movement. Chinese flag was pulled down to the ground while the protestors hoisted Tibetan and Indian national flags at the same time. Skit and drama were also entertained to the media to showcase the condition of Tibetans under Chinese police in Tibet. Slogans were raised both in English and Tamil in order to ensure that local pedestrians also internalise our issue. 

The protest ended with the singing of Tibetan and Indian national anthems. All the media including several television channels stayed awed till the end. Finally, RTWA president gave a vote of thanks to all participants including the Indian friends and supporters. Students finally returned home walking till they reached home as a mourning a protest.

  3. Tibet definitely needs all out support. The irony is the PRC announces the colonization of Tibet as Liberation of Tibet from a religious head. Unfortunately the left intellectuals in India who loudly proclaim that every nationality has a right to self determination keep a silence on the right of the Tibetans in determining their right of freedom. This issue needs to be addressed aggressively to make out a public opinion stronger against China

  4. You are right in saying this Ramamoorthi. I think the leftist in India doesn't know anything about freedom except how to oppose United States even if it means disadvantage to India.

    Indian leftist should understand that Tibet is very important strategically for India.

1. Organize presentations & community forums
2. Show Tibetan films documentary

3. Boycott Chinese goods

4. Organize community boycotts

5. Educate businesspersons about the importance of Boycotting Chinese goods

6. Write articles & letters for the newspapers

7. Organize interviews with the radio & TV stations

8. Organize press conferences

9. Develop & distribute flyers & posters

10. Organize benefit concerts

11. Telephone 1 person each day & talk with them about China, Tibet, & the U.S.A.

12. Give articles about Tibet to your friends, co-workers, classmates, & relatives

13. Report inaccurate maps & facts about Tibet in books to the publisher

14. Fly the Tibetan Flag at your home, business, and/or school

15. Burn white candles each evening in prominent or public places

16. Walk for Tibet's independence in your community

17. Wear a "Tibet" button

18. Put a bumper sticker on your car & give them to others

19. Set up information tables in public places

20. Write letters to government officials (U.S. & PRC) & human rights' groups. Along with other issues, demand that Gendhun Choekyi Nyima be released

21. Circulate various petitions about Tibet & Tibetans

22. Recite long life prayers for The Dalai Lama & The Panchen Lama

23. Recite prayers to remove the obstacles to restore Tibet's independence

24. Hold silent vigils to symbolize the silent voices of Tibetans in Tibet

25. Visit internet chat rooms each day & educate & discuss Tibet, the PRC, & the U.S.A.

26. Wear rangzen bracelets demonstrating your support for Tibet's independence. Share these bracelets with your relatives, co-workers, & friends

27. Each day, wear the name of a different Tibetan Political Prisoner on your clothing

28. Organize hunger strikes for Tibet

29. Ask your radio stations to play "The Yak Band" (Purchase tape from ITIM)

30. Collect Signatures for Tibet's independence. Return petitions to ITIM

31. Collect Signatures for Boycotting Chinese Products. Return petitions to ITIM

32. Host Tibetans visiting your area

33. Raise Funds to assist Tibet Support Groups

Remember: It is easy for us to do many of these activities. Tibetans inside Tibet, in contrast, could possibly be imprisoned or killed for participating in any one of these activities. Whatever you do for Tibet, please be mindful of this reality.
