South India leg of “Flame of Truth” relay Reaches Chennai

Chennai: July 11, 2012

“Flame of Truth” relay, which was launched from Kochi made its journey to Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and reached the city on 7th July morning. At the beginning Mr. Karma Yeshi, Member of Tibetan Parliament-in-exile, who was accompanied the torch addressed the group of media on the campaign in English and a local Tibetan woman also addressed the media in Tamil language.




Later a group of Tibetans and local Indian supporters including Mr. Anto, a member of Friends of Tibet, India gathered at the Collector’s office and began the “Flame of Truth” relay march with the prayer of truth and Tibetan national anthem. The group then marched to the city with the flame.
A representative of Tibetan sweater seller association then carried forward the signature campaign to the nearby Ooty Township. Collection of signatures from local Indians will go on till November 15. The event was widely covered by local media.


On 7th July evening “Flame of Truth” relay began its journey further to the state of Pondicherry via Chennai. Flame of Truth reached Pondicherry city on 9th July evening. On July 10 at 11:30 a.m. Mr. Karma Yeshi, Member of Tibetan Parliament-in-exile, who accompanied the torch addressed the media at Pondicherry Press Club. All the media representatives were distributed with campaign documents.

Mr. Karma then met a group of local Tibetans and briefed them on the present grave situation inside Tibet and the “Flame of Truth” relay campaign. Mr. Karma Yeshi later visited a nearby Auroville town and met a group of individuals. Tibetans and supporters will collect signatures to be submitted to the United Nations on Human Rights day on 10th December 2012.
“Flame of Truth” relay then began its journey towards Chennai, capital city of Tamil Nadu (State), South India. Mr. Karma Yeshi today addressed the morning assembly of Lady Andal School (one of the most prominent schools of the city) and briefed students and staff on the ongoing “Flame of Truth” relay campaign launched by Tibetan Parliament. School prefects also initiated the signature campaign and school students and staff had promised to collect more signatures and submit same to the committee by due date of November 15 by showing tremendous support.

Later Mr. Karma Yeshi visited Loyala College and met with Rev. Fr. M. G. Selvin Raj SJ, the Director of the All India Catholic University Federation (AICUF) and briefed him on the current situation inside Tibet and “Flame of Truth” signature campaign. Rev. Fr. M. G. Selvin Raj SJ signed the appeal letter and promised to raise the issue of Tibet in AICUF meeting going to be held in August this year and collect thousands of signatures to support the issue of Tibet. Mr. Karma and his delegation including local Tibetan students and Tibet supporter aunty Aasha Reddy visited Madras University and Madras Christian College and initiated the signature campaign.
Mr. Karma Yeshi will address the media in Chennai on July 12, 2012.
Through this “Flame of Truth” signature campaign, we urge UN member states and Secretary General to address following demands:    
1.      The United Nations must discuss the issue of Tibet based on the resolutions that it has passed in 1959, 1961 and 1965, and continuously make efforts to fulfil the substance of these resolutions
2.      An independent international fact-finding delegations must immediately be sent to investigate the ongoing crisis in Tibet
3.       The United Nations must take special responsibility to ensure that the basic aspirations of the Tibetans inside Tibet are fulfilled

22. Recite long life prayers for The Dalai Lama & The Panchen Lama

23. Recite prayers to remove the obstacles to restore Tibet's independence

24. Hold silent vigils to symbolize the silent voices of Tibetans in Tibet

25. Visit internet chat rooms each day & educate & discuss Tibet, the PRC, & the U.S.A.

26. Wear rangzen bracelets demonstrating your support for Tibet's independence. Share these bracelets with your relatives, co-workers, & friends

27. Each day, wear the name of a different Tibetan Political Prisoner on your clothing

28. Organize hunger strikes for Tibet

29. Ask your radio stations to play "The Yak Band" (Purchase tape from ITIM)

30. Collect Signatures for Tibet's independence. Return petitions to ITIM

31. Collect Signatures for Boycotting Chinese Products. Return petitions to ITIM

32. Host Tibetans visiting your area

33. Raise Funds to assist Tibet Support Groups

Remember: It is easy for us to do many of these activities. Tibetans inside Tibet, in contrast, could possibly be imprisoned or killed for participating in any one of these activities. Whatever you do for Tibet, please be mindful of this reality.
